The jury awarded $21.7 Million to Joanne Anderson, her husband and their children who were exposed asbestos through the baby powder of the company. The award included the amount of $4 million in punitive damages. The family also filed suit against J&J's suppliers including Imerys SA and Honeywell International.

The verdict was delivered just blocks from J&J's headquarters. The jury determined that the company was aware asbestos' dangers in the talc it made but failed to warn its customers. The plaintiffs' lawyer, Moshe Konigsberg of Levy Konigsberg, in New York, along with associate Christopher Panatier from Simon Greenstone Panatier, in Dallas The company was found to have was guilty of "maliciously or willfully disregard" for plaintiffs’ safety.
