It's the only robotic vacuum/mop that scored 100% in our evaluations due to a mix of high-tech sensors that include cameras, a structured light system and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot we tested that is fully autonomously refill and empty its base station, and it has an industry-leading 12,000Pa suction and self-cleaning mop pads.

Like other iRobot models like the X40 is easy to use, offering an intuitive mobile app interface and integration with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit and Google Assistant. The only issue is that it's still quite an eerily noisy device that could be a problem if you run it in the morning prior to work, or at night when you attempt to sleep.

It's also quite expensive but not as much as the Ecovacs MaxV Ultra or the Roborock S8 Omni, which are equally capable and better looking. This is a two-in-one vacuum that's very capable, but it will cost you more and produce more noise.

4. iRobot Roomba L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop with a lot of advanced features that will let you get rid of your chores. The L20 Ultra is a hands-free cleaning device that is similar to Ecovacs' top-of-the-range X2 Omni or Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra. It features a multi-functional dock that can automatically empty the vacuum's bin and fills up the water tank, and washes and dry the mop pads.

The smart robot employs a combination of LIDAR and structured light to draw out floor plans and spot obstacles, navigating more intelligently than some of its premium competitors. It also has a front-mounted camera for real-time hazard detection however, it wasn't reliable in our tests and was often confused by power cords or other obstructions.

Its vacuum has a high suction maximum of 7,000 Pascals which is more than enough to finish the job. It also has "Intelligent Dirt Detection", which regulates the intensity at which the vac works and alters the frequency of cleaning for different areas of your home depending on the amount of dirt they tend to be.

For larger houses, it's worth opting for a model that has zone or spot cleaning modes that let you tell the robot to clean one particular area of your home using the app or voice controls. If you have furniture, a stair mode is also a good option. Finally, a recharge and resume function that allows your robot vacuum to continue where it left off is ideal for busy families.

iRobot RX3

The RX3 is a cleaner with more intelligence than you might expect from its price tag. It has a great vacuuming performance, picking up 55% debris in our tests. (It was only second to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mopses using a single pad and a reciprocating motion that is more efficient than most of the robot mop cleaners that we've tried. It's also self-sufficient, with a fully-featured app as well as an auto-emptying, washable base.
