The authors of the Pragmatic Free Trial Meta identified 48 RCTs self-labeled as pragmatic and were published up to 2022. The PRECIS-2 tool was used to evaluate the degree of pragmatism. It covers areas like eligibility criteria and flexibility in recruitment as well as adherence to interventions and follow-up. They discovered that 14 trials scored highly pragmatic or pragmatic (i.e. scoring 5 or above) in at least one of these domains.

Studies with high pragmatism scores are likely to have broader criteria for eligibility than conventional RCTs. They also contain patients from a variety of hospitals. The authors suggest that these traits can make the pragmatic trials more relevant and applicable to everyday practice, but they do not necessarily guarantee that a trial conducted in a pragmatic manner is free from bias. The pragmatism characteristic is not a definite characteristic the test that doesn't have all the characteristics of an explanatory study could still yield valid and useful outcomes.
