Discover What Kanye West Poster Is
The filmmaker who spent a year with Taylor Swift on the groundbreaking documentary about the star, has divulged secrets from behind the scenes - including why the star's relationship with Joe Alwyn was left out of the film.
Speaking at an intimate screening of Miss Americana on November 23 at New York City's Museum of Moving Image, Lana Wilson, 41, said she 'never conceived' that Taylor could become even more of a cultural phenomenon than she was at the time.
Taylor, 34, was dating English actor Joe Alwyn - and their relationship was grounding for the popstar, who was then struggling from the backlash of her public 2016 feud with rapper Kanye West and his now-ex-wife Kim Kardashian.
In the documentary, only a few minutes are devoted to the couple's mutual decision to keep their relationship private and how this benefited Taylor's mental health.
The two dated from 2016 to 2023. Although, neither commented on the reason why they split, Taylor's album The Tortured Poets Department had fans speculating that he cheated. The album also alluded to her brief rebound with rockstar Matty Healy.
The filming took place during her 2018 Reputation Stadium Tour till the release of her lover's album in 2019. Throughout the Reputation album, multiple tracks Taylor writes are love songs to Alwyn.
Lana Wilson, 41, said she was not interested in depicting Taylor Swift's, 34, love life in the film which is why her ex-boyfriend Joe Alwyn wasn't featured in the film aside from Taylor briefly mentioning their relationship during the year she isolated from the public
The documentary Miss Americana was released in 2020 and followed Taylor closely from her 2018 Reputation Stadium Tour to her album Lover's release in 2019
But despite this and Taylor's lack of objection in talking about her romance, Wilson said she was not interested in depicting Taylor's love life in the film.
When asked if she had wished she had included Alwyn in her film, Wilson said: 'Not really. I didn't even meet him till the very end, but no, because her relationships have been through the microscope, I didn't really have any interest in filming that.
'She's been through so much, this should be private, like it's not related to the themes in the film or what I thought she was going through right then.
'I thought she was going through something so profound and powerful, this real change that didn't really have anything to do with her relationships so it was never something I wanted to film actually.
It felt disrespectful and weird to me. It never occurred to me in a strange way.'
The film comprised cellphone videos filmed by Taylor, interviews, concert recordings and archive footage.
Wilson was recruited by Taylor Swift to work on her documentary because of her background in political documentaries
In one memorable scene, her father Scott pleaded with Taylor to not make a statement, saying he was 'terrified' for her safety, but Taylor said she would be doing it anyways
Taylor endorsed Democrat Phil Bredesen for Tennessee's 2018 Senate race in an Instagram post, despite her father and her management team's wishes
It memorably featured Taylor defiantly arguing to her father and management team that she would speak out against then-president Donald Trump and Republican Tennessee Senator candidate Marsha Blackburn ahead of the 2018 midterms.
They argued that her decision to speak out could cost her fans since she had never been vocal about any political allegiances in the past. At one point, her father Scott Kingsley Swift expressed worry over her security saying he's 'terrified'.
Taylor passionately gave her reasons for opposing Blackburn and told her father: 'Dad, I just need you to forgive me for doing it, 'cause I'm doing it.'
Wilson recalled the significance of this altercation: 'There's something about getting to witness someone actually change and evolve in some way that might seem kind of small from the outside,' she said.
'But once you know her whole history and the psychology and all that stuff, it's actually a really big change for her- deciding to do something that was not what her dad wanted her to do and that was risky and difficult.'
While Taylor was vocal about her political allegiances in the film, her endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris only came after the first and only presidential debate on September 10.

Taylor was mostly silent for the 2024 presidential election until September 10, when she publicly endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris after watching the presidential debate
In an Instagram post from that day, Taylor referenced Vice-President elect JD Vance's previous remark about 'childless cat ladies' - with the superstar signing off her long caption 'With love and hope, Taylor Swift Childless Cat Lady.'
Wilson said of her endorsement: 'I thought it was great. I loved the way her endorsement was written because I thought it was so her.
'It was clear and funny, but also didn't push people into thinking a certain way and really respected the space of her audience to vote for who they wanted to.'
In contrast to the animated discussions with her father, Wilson said she especially prized Taylor' scenes with her mother, who was seen battling cancer in the film.
'I found her incredibly honest in talking about her life, especially with her mum,' Wilson said. 'She really lets loose with her mum in this amazing way.'
Although Wilson has gone on to make a documentary about Brooke Shields, Kanye West Poster Taylor was her first celebrity subject.
Wilson said Taylor felt best about being filmed for the documentary when there were as few people in the room as possible - especially for the more sensitive scenes
Her album Reputation spoke about her struggles to change her perspective after the 2016 feud with kanye west posters and how her relationship with Alwyn helped her
When Netflix asked Wilson how she would approach the film, she responded that she wanted to focus on Taylor's creativity as the brain - not just the face - behind her brand - describing her as 'underestimated and misunderstood'.

For the streaming platform, this was surprising, as they recounted to Wilson how Taylor, 34, had similarly described her own vision for the film.
'Whether I was psychically channeling something, I don't know!' She said.
Taylor was drawn to Wilson's track record of making political documentaries. The filmmaker said Taylor particularly enjoyed their conversations around gender inequality in show business - which led to the birth of Miss Americana (2020).
Wilson said: 'I sense that probably part of the reason she wanted a filmmaker known for political work was because she knew I would be sympathetic and not judging and very open and very game and excited to talk about all that stuff with her.'
It was a vulnerable time for Taylor who was experiencing backlash from both media and the internet over Kanye's song Famous - it went so far that #TaylorSwiftIsOver was the number one search trending on X.
The documentary covered Taylor Swift's life after her very public feud with Kanye West and his now-ex-wife Kim Kardashian over his song Famous
The offensive lyric about Taylor referenced the mortifying 2009 MTV Video Music Awards run-in with Kanye where he interrupted the then 19-year-old singer's award speech to announce his opinion that Beyonce should've won.
On filming and interviewing this part of Taylor's life, Wilson said: 'I didn't know about any of this Kanye [West] stuff, I didn't know she had withdrawn from interviews, [but] I knew her music because her songs are so personal...I was also wondering, having never met any celebrity before, what is this going to be like?'
In these emotional moments, Wilson said the singer felt best about being filmed when there were as few people in the room as possible.
'It's very different, it's actually way more sensitive and more challenging to film with them and for them to feel relaxed around the camera, because in particular with this person you can see that cameras have been sometimes a destructive, harmful force in her life,' she said.
'Cameras are filming her in the bushes and [photographers are] jumping out at her, it's not an easy situation. The first thing I would do was set up something where I would go in the room first always and one to two people maximum would come with me.'
Revealing her ground rules for making the film, Wilson said, 'I wanted to not tell a Wikipedia biography of her and I had some rules around that.
'No number one songs in the film, no famous person problems, like stuff that only celebrities deal with, but it was also those flashbacks of her age 13, age 15, to really position it as a coming-of-age story.'
Miss Americana premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2020 and became the highest-rated Netflix-original biographical documentary by an artist when it premiered on the streaming giant a week later.
