It also doesn't come with a camera that would let it see the corners of the room.

It lacks the edge-to-edge bare floor vacuuming offered in the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30. It's also less effective in mopping. With a sleek circular design that looks like a regular Roomba than the competitors' boxy units, this robot vacuum and mop combo is one of the most appealing looking in our tests. iRobot's latest flagship model also is among the most intelligent model, with features that are cutting-edge like Enhanced Dirt Detection Technology and future compatibility with Matter (another company's robot that can wash its own mop pads).

It's the only robotic mop or vacuum to score 100% in our tests due to a mix of high-tech sensors that include a camera, structured light system, and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra was the only robot we tested that could refill and empty its basestation in a self-contained manner. It also boasted an industry-leading suction of 12,000Pa and self-cleaning mops.

The X40 as with other iRobot products, is easy to use. It comes with a simple mobile application interface and is compatible with Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit. The only drawback is that it's a noisy unit, which can be a problem if you run it in the morning before work, or at night when you try to fall asleep.

It's also a bit expensive however, not as much as the Ecovacs S8 MaxV Ultra or Roborock S8 Omni, which are equally powerful and more attractive. If you're willing to put up with a bit more noise and a little more cost, this is a very capable two-in-one that should please almost everyone.

It comes with a multi-function dock that automatically emptys the vacuum's dustbin, refills its water tank and washes and dries its mop pads.

The smart robot uses LIDAR and structured lighting to map out floor plans and detect obstacles. It navigates more intelligently than its competitors with premium features. It also has a front mounted camera that can detect hazards in real-time, though this wasn't 100% reliable in our tests and was often confused with obstructions or power cords.

Its vacuum has a suction capacity of 7,000 Pascals, which is more than enough to finish the job. It also has "Intelligent Dirt Detection", that regulates the amount of time the vacuum works and also adjusts the frequency of cleaning for different areas of your home in accordance with the degree of dirt they are.

For bigger homes, it's worth opting for models with spot or zone cleaning modes that allow you to tell the robot to clean a specific area of your home using the app or voice commands. A stair mode can be beneficial if you have large furniture. Additionally, a recharge and resume function that lets your robot vacuum continue where it left off is ideal for busy families.

The well-designed iRobot app guides you through an initial mapping run that gathers information about your floorplan and any "no-go" areas you have marked on the map. It can be used to create cleaning schedules or to create a spot-clean. It can also be used to it to prioritize your dirtiest areas to improve performance.
